World Plumbing Day: The Importance of Plumbing In Every Day Life

March 11, 2020

This year on World Plumbing Day, we are taking a moment to reflect on the importance of the plumbing industry, as well as ongoing efforts to continually push the envelope of sustainable plumbing products.  The world needs these two pillars of water stewardship to ensure the ongoing safety and prosperity of our people.

An effective and efficient plumbing system is something that the Western World completely takes for granted.   We understand  the beauty and efficiency of new fixtures we install, but behind the walls is where a lot of the 'magic' lies!  Our plumbing system ensures reliable access to clean water, disposes of human waste in a hygienic way to limit the spread of disease and allows us to conserve water in order to maintain life.

Water feeds the cycle of life and we are grateful to be working alongside  everyday heroes who work tirelessly to sustain the system providing that water to our homes and families.  Mechanical contractors, plumbers, engineers,  and plumbing inspectors ensure that our systems are safe and effective.  Their work has built the confidence we have in our drinking water.  The very fact that we take it all for granted shows just how well it is all working!

For over 75 years, Caroma has been passionate about protecting and conserving water to benefit the Earth. Conscious that we co-exist with the land, our products are designed with the vision of protecting the vital water resources for the next generation. Innovation lies at the heart of the Caroma success story.

World's First Dual Flush

In 1980, Caroma developed the first Dual Flush toilet which saved approx. 32,000 litres of water per household due to change in full flush/ half flush technology.  It seems simple now, but the concept of using more water to flush solid waste and less to flush liquid waste was truly revolutionary.  As often is the case, Caroma's Dual-flush  was introduced as an answer to an incredibly challenging time when Australia's water shortage was so severe that they had predicted the extinguising of their fresh water supply within 20 years.  This innovation and the full scale adoption across the country reset the clock on the fresh water supply timeline and Caroma's continuing work toward sustainability continues to protect the water supply in Australia and around the world.

Caroma Smartflush

In 2005, Caroma's Smartflush® technology won the Australian International Design Award and Home Beautiful Product of the Year. The Smartflush® further reduced water consumption to only 4.5L/3L.  This is far from the end though as Caroma continues to take a leadership role in protecting safe drinking water across the globe.
